Anzac Day 2015

Anzac Day Service – April 25, 2015 |  9:00 am Windsor War Memorial Park | Lutwyche Road & Roblane Street | Windsor

What a memorable service  was held in Windsor War Memorial Park on 25 April 2015 to commemorate the centenary of the landing of the ANZACs at Gallipoli and the 90th anniversary of the unveiling of the Windsor War Memorial.

Windsor and Districts Historical Society Inc. was honoured to acknowledge, in this service, the Indigenous Service Men and Women who took part in World War I, in subsequent conflicts and in peacekeeping forces. The Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag flew on the two new flag poles erected in the park.

Decorated boxes designed to pay tribute to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have been involved, and in many cases sacrificed their lives, whilst serving proudly with the Australian defence forces between 1881 and the present day surrounded each new flag pole. These art work panels were painted by senior Indigenous students from the Aboriginal & Islander Independent Community School at Acacia Ridge.

In addition, step treads from the original building at St Mary of the Cross Catholic Primary School in Grafton St, Windsor were restored to also acknowledge the service of the Indigenous forebears. and were displayed at the service.

Recent rain should help establish the Australian native plants in the new gardens established under the fig tree near the War Memorial. The Society is grateful for the help provided by the staff at Paten Park Native Nursery at the Gap in selecting the plants and designing the layout of the garden and to Brisbane City Council Parks Department for their planting.

The erection of the new flag poles, the art work panels and the planting of the new gardens was made possible with a grant the Society received under the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program.

After the service the Society welcomed everyone at the Chambers for morning tea and Anzac biscuits and a sausage sizzle cooked by Windsor Rotary.

Sincere thanks again to the many who helped us ………… on the day – before the service delivering and setting up chairs and marquees and the art panels in the park; playing key roles during the service and recording it for our archives; and after the service manning our displays and providing the morning tea to those who came across to the Chambers ….….. and in baking lots and lots and lots of Anzac biscuits in the weeks beforehand.

The Society is honoured to continue to be able to facilitate this service each year.
